A team of 7 Men and 1 Woman from Woking AC were in action in Dorking last Sunday (12th June) competing in the Surrey County Road Running Championships. On a hot day and on a tough hilly course Woking’s athletes were up against the best club runners Surrey have to offer on this difficult10 mile course.

The competition was fierce but Woking’s runners finished strong with the men’s team finishing just outside the medals in 4th place in the County Championship Race with the Scoring Team of Ben Goddard 6th, David Brighton 15th, James Gamble 32nd and also finishing 4th in the Surrey Road League with King Diggins 35th adding to the overall team finishing position.

Ben Goddard, ran an impressive time of 55:52, finished in 6th overall in the league results and David Brighton finished in 58:05 taking in a 3rd place in the men’s 40-49 age category for the Surrey Championships, a fantastic achievement:

Woking’s young athletes were back in action over the weekend at the Surrey Schools Championships in Stratford whilst another, Tyler Panton, was in action at a high standard open meeting in Stratford. In addition to these meetings the Senior Men and Women were also in action in their 2nd Southern Athletics League in Harrow. There were many fine performances with 10 medals won at the Surrey Schools Championships and Tyler achieving a new personal best in the 100 metres.

Currently ranked 4th in the UK for Under 20 men in the 100 metres Tyler moved up to 3rd in the UK with a new personal best time of 10.54 seconds. He had earlier ran a quicker time of 10.49 seconds but the wind was slightly over the limit at 2.2 metres per second, the legal limit being 2.0. Both were fine runs and he is now running consistently fast times which has led to Tyler being selected for the Great Britain Junior team for the Bauhaus Junior Gala held in Manheim Germany where top junior athletes from across Europe will be competing. This is a terrific achievement and hopefully there will be many National call ups in the future.

Another athlete competing on the international stage, James Hanson, reduced his own club record time in the 200 metres to 20.80 seconds at a meeting in Espoo Finland to maintain his UK ranking of 12.

At the Surrey Schools Championships there were three gold medal winners with Emelia Wazydrag winning the Junior (Under 15) girls Hammer adding over two metres to her old personal best launching it to 23.28 metres. The other throwers on show were also on fine form. Matthew Smith produced arguably the best performance from a Woking athlete in the Inter (Under 17) Boys Discus to win the silver medal with a new personal best throw of 40.22 metres moving him up to 12th in the UK and just 3 centimetres shy of a National Grade 1 performance. There was another silver medallist in the Junior Boys Shot Putt with Jack Harel adding nearly 1 and half metres to his previous best putting a very impressive 11.49 metres. The fourth thrower picking up a medal was Jack Dormer in the Junior Boys Javelin throwing 35.59 metres which was also good enough for silver.

The 2 other gold medallists came in the 800 metres. In his first track races of the season Zavier Zinman eased through the heats of the Junior Boys 800 metres before going on to win the final in time just outside of 2 minutes 10 seconds winning by just under second in a exciting race. The other gold medal winner was Theo Cheshire in the Senior (Under 20) Boys 800 metres winning in a season’s best time of 2 minutes 01 seconds.  There was also bronze medal for Lola Roake in the Junior Girls 1500 metres who ran a very impressive time of 4 minutes 54.2 seconds, a national grade 2 performance. Elsewhere in the middles events Oscar Sinnett finished fifth in the Junior Boys 1500 metres in a new personal best time of 4 minutes 44.4 seconds.

In the long jump there were 2 further medal winners. In the Inter Girls competition Laura Kersley added 29cm to her previous best ever jump in the 6th and final round to win the silver medal with a great leap of 5.09 metres. In the senior Girls event Fara Jasani was just 3 cm shy of her personal best in winning the sliver medal with a leap of 4.95 metres.

The final medal was won by club’s newest member with Nerys Tullett winning the sliver medal in a personal best time of 48.54 seconds.

In the Southern Athletics League Woking’s Senior team finished 2nd overall with a fine overall team performance with Fara Jasani and Laura Kersley in action again with Fara jumping 4.99 metres and Laura 4.95 metres. Thomas Leacock returning from injury finished 2nd in the 100 metres. All rounders Kaspars Kasemaks, Roy Chambers and Rory Kelly had busy afternoon and contributed greatly to the overall team score. Chloe Sharp completed a fine double win in the 800 metres and 1500 metres steeple-chase and under 20 Martin Sunderland got a new personal best in the 1500 metres with 4 minutes 07.73 whilst Florence Baulk got a season’s best in the javelin with 37.12 metres.

Woking’s youngsters are next in action at the Wessex League on Sunday 19th June in Aldershot where the under 11’s right up to the under 17’s will be in action.

Well done team – we eased ourselves nicely into the Southern athletics league last week, I think our tactics were spot on – lulling our competition into a sense of security by not beating anybody but only by miniscule points, they will have written us off now, a very very, dangerous thing to do where Woking AC are concerned 😊

3.5 points separated 4th and 2nd place, which left many of us kicking ourselves for things we didn’t do or should have done, me for one, if I’d had hopped over a teeny-weeny bar on pole vault, that would have been 3 points!

No point beating ourselves up though, it was a fantastic day out, the sun shone and we had the best team even if we didn’t win. Lots of laughs and drama along the way and even a few P.B’s thrown in!

A BIG welcome to our newbies this year who were: (ladies first) Alexis Brown equalling her PB on 100m then running a huge PB in the 200m. Alexa Adams who ran a 100m PB, stepped up to score for the 200m and ran a leg of the 4x100m for us, welcome to these young sprinters!. Great to have Chloe Sharp join us this year who won both her A string 800m and 1500m race comfortably and then ran a leg of the 4x400m for us. Chloe is a VERY accomplished runner over any distance 400m to 10k illustrated by her current U23 ranking of 4th in all UK Park runs this year!. New from Camberley, Lauren Chadwick joins us, Lauren ran a great 400m and then followed up with a leg of the 4×100 AND 4x400m relays, brilliant!

On to the men, a raft of new sprinters join us this year covering various age groups, Jake Etherington from Camberley ran a brilliant 11.9 ns 100m – now if I’d have known that Jake you’d have had a letter not a number on your vest!. Alistair Smith ran a 12.3 100m (should have been letters) and also ran a strong 200m ns. Finlay McGuiness ran a healthy ns 100m and 200m both PB’s! Matt Berry representing the ‘more mature’ male also ran ns 100m and 200m and holds some very respectable UK rankings for these distances.

Watching our men sprinters walking back from a stretch of knee highs I was reminded of the ‘Peaky Blinder’ strut – don’t mess with these boys!

On the longer distances we welcome Archie Robinson, thrown right in at the deep end with a super speedy B string 800m, well done Archie you got a PB!. Keep up the hard work and it won’t be long before you can beat those boys! Jack Phillpotts ran a HUGE PB in the men’s 1500m to score 3 points, again, lots more to come from this young man.

King Diggens joined us for the first time to tick that steeplechase box and what a performance he put in, scoring 3 points and running himself into a ranking of 4th V45! – without any steeple training (not advisable but BRILLIANT!).

Dave Hunt – Hardly a newbie to the team as he was a member at Woking AC before records began (1985). One of our favourite officials and coaches, and now athlete! Dave was persuaded to throw a hammer for us in-between officiating and scored us a point! Whoo hoo! Dave last competed for the SAL in 2013. Another piece of interesting information is that his high jump PB is 1.93! – you might regret me finding that out Dave – just saying!.

Moving on to the regulars. We are EXTREMELY fortunate to have on our team some amazing multi-eventers who have far too much energy and like to use that energy to score points for Woking AC rather than drive their family completely bonkers.

First up Dave (our resident fireman) – Dave completed TEN events on Sunday, scoring a whopping 20 points (plus relays). Phenomenal effort Dave, I think that’s the most I’ve ever witnessed (and I’ve been around awhile) …. If you’d have got that shot out, we might have even won (I’M JOKING!) It’s a big fat thank you from me and the rest of the squad for your efforts, and you always do it with such a big smile and great hair.

Kaspars, another one of Woking’s gems, despite a back niggle, completed EIGHT events, scoring us 13 points (plus relays). Some great performances for early season (and with a bad back) Kas, and always looking so ridiculously ‘smooth’.

George Hopkins, pay attention! A BRILLIANT start to the SAL season, only allowed to complete in 5 events as an U20 George scored a huge 17 points for us, winning his Pole vault, triple jump and javelin and scoring a 2nd in high jump and 3rd in long jump. Its amazing what you can achieve with a big bowl of pasta! 😉 Well done, George.

On to the ladies who multi-event – this year Clare Maurer had a funny five minutes and absconded to TVH first claim, and my other golden girl Sam is currently injured, hopefully back with us soon.

So, the golden girls of this match were without a doubt Florence Baulk and Katie Hopkins. Florence completed in 7 events, scoring us 17 points (plus relay), winning her 400h and javelin, second in triple (PB) and hammer (PB by 3m!!!) also scoring in long jump and discus and surviving my driving to the match and back home.

Katie completed in 6 events, scoring 16 points (plus relay). Katie won her 1500m and scored second in 400h, steeplechase, pole vault and triple jump, like her brother, super bouncy especially when well fed. Great to see these 2 girls loving and smashing the day having been Woking AC buddies since they were diddy.

I have said this every season since 2010 when I started managing the team – ‘Thank god for Eleanor Gatrell’! Every single year and for every single match that she can Eleanor has turned out and thrown shot, hammer, discus and (her least favourite) the javelin, and always scores us lots of lovely points. A very healthy eight points at this match (I promise I won’t mention the discus!).  Ranked 3rd in the UK for shot hammer AND discus, Eleanor is a big ol’ asset for our team (sorry, maybe less of the big!).

An emerging multitasker, Lucy Eaton-Tribe scored in an extremely fast 200m A string, cleared a whopping high jump, threw a shot, and ran a leg of the 4 x 100m for us, so very happy to have you back on the team Lucy.

Also multi-tasking for the ladies, Bea Lafreniere stepped in to clear a B string high jump, ran a leg of the 4 x 100m and then ran a PB and earned us 3 points in the steeplechase, despite pulling a hamstring in the 100m relay! I Really hope you are recovering quickly Bea as we need the likes of you on our team and preferably in one piece!

Some superb performances were clocked up on Sunday, including Connor Trerise, running a 1 minute 17 second PB over the 5000m for 3 points and then running his first track 1500m in a super respectable 4.31.8. Alex Mogford ran a 10 second PB in the 5000m B string and then went on to run a ns 1500m and debut steeplechase sporting the most fabulous sunglasses and smile throughout – fantastic!

Also on the track, Theo Cheshire won his 400m race just outside his PB for this year and scored in the A string 800m. Great to have Martin Sunderland back on the team who seems to have grown about 2 feet since I last saw him! Obviously a good thing on the steeplechase as he scored 2nd in the A string with an incredible PB of 6:51.7 running into a UK U20 ranking of 23!

Amongst our regular reliables, Paul Kelly, turned out for us to throw a hammer with Dave, no doubt passing on some top tips to Dave (maybe a few more needed next time! 😊). Another lovely reliable teamy Natasha Hart ran the B string 400m and was very pleasantly surprised to get a PB and, I might add a UK ranking of 10th V40 – Age is no barrier folks (until you get to my age!).

A big thank you to Sandra Stapinoiu (from Camberley) for running the B string 800m a great performance in another very fast race on the day.

Following 2 pull outs in the 3000m just before the match, Charlotte and Fiona were given the news that they were scoring, not fazed by this (much) out they went and did it, Charlotte getting a PB and Fiona happy to be running well after various set backs recently.

Last but not least 2 more athletes who are getting better with age, Ian Horlock ran a great 200m, JUST outside a PB and gaining a UK V35 ranking of 19! Michael Omakobia (or ‘Dr O’ – though heaven knows why!) came second in the B string 100m, Michael joined us in 2021, currently ranked 32 V35 his times are coming down so watch this space.

To finish off nicely, 2 club records were broken on the day the men’s V35 4x100m AND V35 4 x 400m records were broken by ‘team awesome’: Dr O, Dave, Kas and Ian – who, I might add had also broken the V35 4 x 200m relay club record from 1992! earlier on in the week – quite an incredible achievement I think you’ll agree!

Let’s not forget our AMAZING officials – if you didn’t know, they score us 5 points each and are essential to keep these matches running like clockwork – THANK YOU, THANK YOU, Lesley, Dave, Gina, Dave H and Chris, you are the BEST!

Next stop – Harrow 12th June – Mandy’s in charge as I’m away – so behave yourselves!

Woking’s athletes were in action this weekend at Kingsmeadow at the Surrey County Championships with a history as being widely regarded as one of the best quality championships in the country and this weekend proved no different. There were many high quality performances with many times and distances ranking athletes very high in the country including Olympian Jessie Knight in the women’s 400 metre hurdles. Woking athletes were amongst these picking up many medals with some outstanding performances putting them highly ranked in the country.

On the Saturday the first gold medal was picked up in the under 13 boys 200 metres with Desimi Akinyanju winning a very close race only taking the lead in the final 20 metres showing great relaxation and determination to overhaul the leader to win in a time of 27.01 seconds ranking him 6th in the UK and is a national grade 2 standard. On the Sunday he narrowly missed out on a medal in the 100 metres finishing just 4 100th’s off bronze and just 7 100ths behind silver in a time of 13.37 seconds. In the older age group sprints Tyler Panton continued his fine start to the season with a comfortable win in the under 20 100 metres in a time of 10.74 following up his bronze medal from a fortnight ago in the British University Championships where his time of 10.57 seconds currently ranks him 2nd in the UK.

In the longer sprint Theo Cheshire knocked a huge chunk off his personal best time winning a silver medal in a very good time of 52.11 seconds

The actual first medal was picked up by Alice Clark in the under 15 girls long jump where she achieved a personal best distance of 4.75 metres. Alice improved on her distance in every round and after being pipped into 2nd place by 1 cm in the last round she leapt to her new best distance to take the silver medal. She followed this up on the Sunday with another silver in the discus with a distance of 25.02 metres, just shy of her personal best.

Elsewhere in the long jump Woking picked up a hat-trick of bronze medals  with Fara Jasani jumping 4.87 metres in the under 20 women’s competition, Lucy Tribe was third in the senior women’s competition with Laura Kersley 3rd in the under 17 women’s competition. Earlier Laura had a very good run in the 80 metre hurdles with a new personal best time of 12.70 seconds with the winner of the race running a time ranking her number one in the UK.

In the throws on the Saturday Jack Dormer threw a huge personal best in the under 15 boys javelin adding over 5 metres to his previous best winning a silver medal with a throw of 36.02 metres. Jack Harel was just shy of his personal best winning the silver medal in the under 15 boys shot putt with a throw of 9.75 metres. In the senior women’s throws Eleanor Gatrell was 2nd in the discus and Florence Baulk was third in the javelin. Eleanor then went onto win her specialist event the shot putt on the Sunday.

Early Sunday produced a glut of medals with Ella Barker winning silver in the under 20 400 metre hurdles and newcomer Nerys Tullett winning the under 17 women’s 300 metre hurdles in a time of 49.03 seconds. Emelia Wazydrag then won the under 15 girls hammer with a personal best throw of 21.04 metres, adding 3 metres to her previous best. The under 15 girls high jump produced an exciting competition with 3 athletes contesting 1.53 metres with 2 being Woking athletes in Olivia Heming and Milla Hadley. Both narrowly missed clearing the height but both produced personal bests in clearing 1.50 metres with Olivia winning silver and Milla winning bronze ranking them currently in the top 25 in the UK. In the under 13 girls long jump Evie Wiltshire was another to produce a personal best performance with a leap of 4.27 metres to win the bronze medal, just missing out on silver.

The performance of the day from a Woking perspective came in the under 15 girls 1500 metres with Lola Roake having a superb run showing her normal strong sprint finish to win a silver medal in a fantastic new personal best time of 4 minutes 47.25 seconds which currently ranks her 16th in the country and is a national grade 1 performance. Imogen Freeman also qualified for the final running a personal best time and showing great promise.

There were a further 2 medals later in the day in the throws with Matthew Smith not having the best of the weather conditions in the shot putt but still winning the bronze medal with a throw of 12.05 metres which is just shy of his personal best but still a national grade 3 performance. He went one better in the discus by winning the silver medal to complete a fine weekend for the Woking athletes in all disciplines.

Woking athletes are next in action this weekend at the Youth development League Lower match in Bournemouth on the Saturday and the Seniors have their first Southern Athletic League fixture on Sunday in Gillingham.

Woking’s young athletes were in action across 2 venues on Sunday with the under 11’s, under 13’s and under 15’s in action at the Wessex League in Oxford and the Under 17’s and Under 20’s at the Youth Development League in Windsor.

The highlights came at Oxford with a huge number of wins and personal bests. The highlights came in the sprints and jumps with the under 13’s particularly shining. In the girls sprints Evie Wiltshire won the 100 metres comfortably in a national grade 2 time of 13.6 seconds and was 2nd in the 200 metres in a grade 3 time of 29.5 seconds as well as winning the long jump in a personal best of 4.07 metres. In the equivalent age group for the boys Desimi Akinyanju  completed a sprint double in the 100 metres and 200 metres with national grade 3 times of 13.3 and 27.6 seconds respectively. He then anchored the 4×100 metres team with  Albert Mount, Arthur Embleton, Lucas Pearman making up the rest to comfortably win finishing around 20 metres clear of the opposition.

In the under 15 boys sprints and long jump Dylan Lewis and Sahil Vassanjee had their own private battle. Dylan came out top in the long jump winning with a personal best jump of 4.95 metres with Sahil just 1 centimetre behind in also a personal best jump of 4.94 metres. In the 200 metres the positions were reversed with Sahil winning in a personal best time of 24.7 seconds and Dylan 2nd in also a personal best time of 25.00 seconds. In the 100 metres they were placed in different races with both winning comfortable with Dylan running 12.1 seconds and Sahil 12.3 seconds, both personal best times.

In the under 15 girls sprints Alice Clark finished a narrow 2nd in the 200 metres whilst Olivia Hemming and Eleanor Buckle both finished 2nd in their respective 100 metres. Along with Mia Reeves they also teamed up for a comfortable win in the 4×100 metres.

In the under 15 girls high jump Milla Hadley won the competition with a height of 1.40 metres, just below her personal best.

In the middle distance vents the best performance came from Jacob Bowyer in the 1500 metres who enjoyed an extremely comfortable win running away from the opposition in a time just outside 5 minutes.

In the under 11 Quadkids Competition the girls had a very successful afternoon of competition with the 5 girls; Florence Fernando, Lucille Cumberland, Isabelle Brehaut, Milan Nessam and Emily Pearce with none of them finishing outside the top 2 in their 75 metre sprint races and filling the 1st 4 places in the 600 metres with Lucille leading them home.  In the under 11 boys Sam Hewitt was the sole competitor from Woking but had a good afternoon winning his 75 metre race and finishing 3rd in the 600 metres.

At the Youth Development league the Woking team were up against very tough opposition in the Premier League. Annabelle Thornton set a personal best in the high jump with a leap of 1.50 metres and Laura Kersley equalled her best in the long jump with 4.70 metres.

Woking’s next meeting is at Winchester in the Youth Development League on the 8th May.

What a welcome sight it was last Sunday to see a competition, albeit a low-key one, being held at our new venue.

It is such a long time since we, as a Club, have been able to work together to run any sort of meeting.  Seeing so many parents, friends and Club members all doing their bit in making the day work was really heartening.  It makes you remember what being part of a friendly Club is all about.

We were very glad to welcome Guildford & Godalming and Camberley & District athletes and officials too for their first visit to Egley Road.

I just wanted to thank everyone for all the effort they put in on the day, and particularly those parents and helpers who may never had the chance to work at a meeting before.  There will be more opportunities to come, I’m sure.

Well done everyone!

Hi All

The Sweatshop in Woking has re-opened and is trading under the name “The Run Company”.  The manager, Karl, is well known to many of us in the Club and he has advised that WAC members will benefit from a 10% discount on all purchases – upon sight of their membership card.

Karl and his staff are experienced and knowledgeable and we believe that it is preferable for athletes to source footwear etc. from a reputable source who can provide sound advice vs purchasing online.  The Run Company provide gait analysis which is very important when purchasing running shoes/spikes.

The Run Company is located at 19 Commercial Way Woking GU21 6XR and  their phone number is 01483.776233

Cross Country Season 2021/22 Starts

Woking Athletic Club athletes were in action last weekend representing Surrey at the annual Southern Inter-counties Championships.

Relocated this year from Oxford to Lloyd Park in Croydon, the hilly and slippery course was no less challenging but despite this the Woking Juniors truly shone in races where over 12 Counties were represented.

In the U13G, Lola Roake and Imogen Freeman, despite this being their first County vests, ran very sensible races. Having studied the course, both started slowly and started moving through the field in the latter stages with Lola (6th) leading the Surrey girls’ home to Gold.

Martin Sunderland (U17M) also ran strongly to support his Surrey U17 teammates.

Woking are next in action in the Surrey Cross Country Championships at Denbies on Sunday 9th January 2022.
