WOKING ATHLETIC CLUB

๐Ÿ’š Getting to knowโ€ฆ Katie Hopkins – Episode 15

Episode 15 features one of the most well-known and well-liked members of our club โ€” Katie Hopkins ๐Ÿ™Œ

Always Be Confident (ABC)

Itโ€™s the mantra thatโ€™s stuck with Katie ever since her late coach Tom told her to remember her โ€œABCsโ€ โ€” and judging by her 16 years (and counting) with Woking AC, sheโ€™s lived by it ever since ๐Ÿ’ช

Katie joined the club back in 2009 and has pretty much done it all since โ€” 800m, cross country, 10k, pole vault, heptathlon, you name it! (Though, to be fair, sheโ€™s drawn the line at hammer and discus โ€” even Coach Kay Trinderโ€™s powers of persuasion have limits ๐Ÿ˜…).

A middle-distance specialist turned long-distance convert, Katieโ€™s proudest moments include helping the Woking AC ladies stay in Division 1 of the Surrey Cross Country League for the past two seasons ๐Ÿ† and representing the South of England over 800m at just 17 ๐ŸŒŸ

Not that itโ€™s all serious business โ€” her true highlight of the year? The Christmas fancy-dress parkrun, obviously ๐ŸŽ…๐ŸŽฝโœจ

She describes Woking AC as โ€œa bit of a weird extended family,โ€ full of lifelong friends and unforgettable coaches ๐Ÿค—

Katie still carries lessons from both Tom and Nick Phipps โ€” the late, much-loved pole vault coach who made training feel magical ๐Ÿ’ซ โ€œI miss them loads,โ€ she says, โ€œand use the lessons they taught me in everyday life.โ€

When sheโ€™s not racing alongside her brother George (โ€œitโ€™s a great way to catch up ๐Ÿ‘ซโ€), Katieโ€™s showing the next generation what WAC spirit looks like โ€” all determination, resilience, perseverance and aspiration (yes, that exact line helped her ace a job interview earlier this month! ๐Ÿ’ผ๐ŸŽ‰).

Post-race, her celebrations swing between team drinks ๐Ÿป or a hot bath and Chinese takeaway ๐Ÿ›๐Ÿฅข โ€” balance in action!

And as for her โ€œnot-so-fun factโ€? Katie once got so lost on a run that she accidentally clocked a half-marathon and was reported missing to the police ๐Ÿš“๐Ÿ˜… Lesson learned: she now always carries a phone, plans her routes and looks out for her fellow runners โ€” because, as she says, โ€œbeing a female runner, staying safe really matters.โ€ ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ’š

From fancy dress to fearless running, Katie embodies what makes Woking AC special โ€” the confidence to try everything, the resilience to keep going, and the family to share it with ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿ“ Editorโ€™s note: Huge thanks to Katie for sharing her story โ€” and her ABCs ๐Ÿ’ซ Sheโ€™s also part of the brilliant team that organises our annual Club Awards Night ๐Ÿ† โ€” a job that takes huge effort behind the scenes. It says everything about her character: dedicated, community-minded, and focused on creating an environment where everyone can grow and discover their potential ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ’š

If we could clone Katie, we absolutely would ๐Ÿคฉ But since science hasnโ€™t caught up just yet, weโ€™d love more ladies to join the team ๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™€๏ธ

If this sounds like your kind of club, drop us a line โ€” weโ€™d love to welcome you to the team! ๐Ÿ’Œ
