WOKING ATHLETIC CLUB

Next up, we’re shining the spotlight on one of Woking AC’s most decorated athletes — our Vice President, British record holder, and World Masters Indoor silver medallist, Eleanor Gatrell.

Earlier this year, Eleanor brought home a silver medal at the World Masters Indoor Championships, breaking her own British age-group record in the process 🥈🇬🇧.

“I felt surprisingly relaxed, even knowing the tough competition,” she says. “After the third round, I was in second place and had the advantage of throwing after my closest rival. With incredible support from my partner Lee and my throwing friends, I held my position and secured the silver — and standing on the podium with the Union Jack was such a proud and emotional moment after months of hard work balancing training and teaching.”

With over three decades in the sport, Eleanor remains passionate about helping others discover the power of throwing — especially young girls.

“Stereotypes still linger, but things are changing! Throwing isn’t about size or strength alone — it’s about technique, power, and mental toughness. Role models like Yemisi Ogunleye and Valarie Allman show that throwers come in all shapes and sizes. To any girls (or parents!) thinking about it: give it a go! It’s empowering, builds confidence, and teaches you so much about resilience and determination.”

Her advice to her younger self? “Focus on the process, not just the results. Every challenge and setback is part of learning and growing. Mistakes aren’t failures — they’re stepping stones.”

After 34 years with Woking AC, Eleanor says what makes the club special has never changed:

“Without a doubt, it’s the people. The coaches, athletes, and officials create an incredible community. It’s not just about becoming a better athlete; it’s about growing as a person too. Woking AC is a family.” 🏡

💬 A huge thank you to Eleanor for sharing her story — and for continuing to inspire the next generation of Woking AC athletes!
