WOKING ATHLETIC CLUB

Getting to know… Claire Brittain – Edition 4 🧡💚

Next up, we’re introducing one of our most enthusiastic endurance runners — and a true cross country devotee — Claire Brittain.

Claire’s favourite event? Cross country — any distance, any amount of mud.

“I never thought of running as a team sport, but cross country definitely is: a muddy, fun, exhausting, and hilarious team adventure.”

She first took up running at 40 and quickly found herself hooked. One 10k turned into a half marathon, then somehow 12 half marathons in 2022 for charity. Eventually, she joined Woking AC, where “Kay Tinder and James McCloud were so welcoming in the Thursday endurance sessions. I’ve never looked back.”

Running has taught her pacing — in running and in life.

“I’ve learned when to hold back and when to push, how to spot fatigue before I burn out. It forces me to prioritise and balance in running and in life.”

After a race, Claire’s celebrations are refreshingly relatable: “About 50% of my motivation comes from the promise of a post-race quarter pounder and milkshake.” 🍔🥤

Every time she pulls on the WAC vest feels special, but a few moments stand out — finishing 2nd lady at the Martian 10k, and “the afternoon I caught the legendary John and Charlie balloons at the WAC ladies’ social — both equally prestigious, obviously.” 🎈

(Editor’s note: this is the first time we’ve heard about the WAC ladies’ social — clearly the invite got lost in the men’s inbox!) 😄

Fun fact: Claire used to play roller hockey in her teens and early twenties — and even picked up a couple of England caps. In true adventurous style, she’s since returned to skating, completing the Berlin Inline Marathon. The bonus? It guarantees her a place in the running marathon the following year — and yes, she’s planning to do both in September 2026, just 16 hours apart.

“Because apparently, pacing myself still needs work.” 😉

With cross country season returning this weekend — and the Woking AC women’s team lining up for their first Division 1 match — it seems Claire’s prayers have been answered. Good luck to all the ladies racing — time to bring on the mud! 💚🏃‍♀️🧡

💬 Brilliant stuff, Claire — thanks for sharing your story and reminding us all that mud, McDonald’s, and midlife adventures can go perfectly together!
