Next up, it’s time to meet one of Woking AC’s brightest young talents — Jack Dormer — middle-distance runner, reluctant javelin thrower, and all-round record-breaker.

Fresh off a string of club records, Jack’s had quite the season — balancing speed, strength, and humility in equal measure.
“I’m a middle-distance runner and part-time javelin thrower — don’t ask me how that works!”
Not everyone knows this, but Jack’s path into the main club actually started through throwing, not running.
“My running times weren’t quite there at first, but with the support of some brilliant coaches and friends, I’ve worked hard in both track and field — and achieved things I couldn’t have dreamed of.”
One of those milestones came at English Schools, where he represented Woking AC proudly.
“It was a great experience, even if the race didn’t go quite as planned. I’ve learnt a lot about championship racing and just how important positioning is. I’m looking forward to competing at that level again.”
Then came a huge breakthrough: going sub-4 for 1500m — and he hadn’t even run the distance in over two years.
“It was a bit unexpected, but I felt great and managed to stay controlled. Definitely an event I’m excited to do more of.”
His best advice? Simple but effective: “Eat, sleep and rest. Training is always hard, and without recovery, you won’t progress.”
Oh, and one bonus gem from a legendary Woking javelin thrower at the Surrey Champs: “Just throw further!” (Apparently, it worked.) ![]()

When it comes to Woking AC, Jack says the secret is simple:
“I think others have said it best — it’s the people. From officials to coaches, athletes to family — everyone at WAC works so hard to make you feel welcome and valued. It really is a team, and it really is orange.” ![]()

And as for what’s next? Believe it or not… cross country.
“After trying some longer distances recently, I’m actually looking forward to more cross country — something I never thought I’d say!”
(Editor’s note: you’re in luck, Jack — the Surrey XC League returns this weekend! And we’re already hearing a few senior athletes are looking nervously over their shoulders… the next generation is definitely warming up!) ![]()
Thanks for sharing your story, Jack — and congratulations on an incredible season so far. The club’s proud to have you flying the orange and green!
